Description

Ultrafiltration (UF) is a type of membrane filtration in which hydrostatic pressure forces a liquid against a semipermeable membrane. A semipermeable membrane is a thin layer of material capable of separating substances when a driving force is applied across the membrane.
Ultrafiltration is not fundamentally different from microfiltration. Both of these separate based on size exclusion or particle capture. Ultrafiltration membranes are defined by the Molecular Weight Cot Off (MWCO) of the membrane used. Ultrafiltration is applied in Cross flow or dead-end mode.
In Water & wastewater treatment, ultrafiltration (UF) plants are used as polishing filter to recycle and reuse the water that contains virtually no physical solids. Suspended solids and solutes of high molecular weight are retained in the so-called retentate, while water and low molecular weight solutes pass through the membrane in the permeate.
Raw water (received from water bodies or Pre-treated effluent/ Sewage) usually contains undesirable sediments & Colloids, Bacteria, Virus and other undesired organisms.
